“Wipe those tears away, we’re here to stay!“
Mermaid Tears is a fanmade idol duo made by Artsy Rose. They host Coral Capital’s news and Splatfests. (Note: This page isn’t finished! I have yet to add some of the information and art.)
Appearance[]
Cie[]
Cie is an Inkling of the species Todarodes pacificus, at the age of 19. She has ocean blue hair tinted with purple; her hair flows behind her, and goes down to her shorts. She has a shell tucked behind her top tentacles, with a small bow made of string attached. Her skin is pale and tinted pink. Her ears spike up, and she has a dangling pearl earring on her left ear. She also has eyelashes mainly on the bottom of her eye. She has the usual Inkling fangs. Her irises are a pinkish purple, with a light yellow, flower shaped pupil.
She wears a tank top with shells on top; her shorts have a mermaid scale pattern on them. She has a light purple bow attached to her shorts, and has purple and blue tights, like her hair. She wears long, white gloves and her shoes are lined with pearls. She also wears a pearl necklace.
Her main colour is purple.
Ren[]
Ren is an Octoling of the species Octopus joubini, at the age of 19. Her hair is a light pink, with a cream gradient. She has two tentacles that frame her face, that curl up to her ears. She also has two longer tentacles at the back that curl up slightly. She has an open clam shell with a pearl inside, attached onto a headband. Her headpiece is behind one of her suction cups. She has circular ears and has tanned skin. Her eyelashes are mainly on the top, and has the same pearl earring as Cie but on the opposite ear. Her fangs are on the right and in the middle, having one on each. Her irises are purple with a pastel orange, star-shaped pupil.
Ren’s clothes consist of a knee-length dress with a bow tied in the middle. The end of the dress is meant to resemble a mermaid’s tail, and has pearls on both the bow and the ends of the dress. Like Cie, her skirt has a mermaid scale pattern. Her tights are like her hair, pink and yellow. Her shoes are also lined with pearls, but on the bottom. She has long white gloves that are alike to Cie’s.

Cie[]
Cie is a very extroverted and sweet Inkling. She’s always the life of the party, making conversation with anybody. She doesn’t care how they look or how they may be, just if they can make them smile and/or become their friend. After all of that though, she exhausts herself and becomes quiet. She tends to overwork herself or possibly get distracted with something else. With Ren though, she tries to be as full of energy as she can to make her closest friend feel happy.
She’s very clingy though; she can get very jealous and very irritated when she doesn’t get what she wants. She’s especially clingy to Ren, as she had never had a bond like the one with Ren’s before. She can become extremely angry easily after a small, harmless joke if she’s jealous of the person. Her confidence came from how much she loved the camera and attention.
She loves helping people, despite all of the jealousy she can feel. Making people smile is one of her main things she loves doing daily. Her love for music and art really comes after she’s more relaxed and not wanting to constantly talk with people.

Despite how she may seem sometimes, she’s very optimistic and rather energetic around the close friends she has. There’s a noticeable difference between when she’s around strangers to when she’s with friends - she’s very calm and quiet around strangers and people she doesn’t know as well, but can crack jokes and become slightly careless around Cie. She loves making inside jokes and having a close relationship with someone, spending most of her life so far away from other people only ever doing work. Even though she is awkward around strangers, she tries her best around fans.
She’s always been very hardworking and focused, so having friends made her lose a lot of weight off her shoulders, especially with Cie’s helping qualities. She never procrastinates and gets things done as soon as she can. A lot of this comes from wanting to please people, and making them feel proud of her. She loves the feeling of having her hard work get paid off.
History[]
Cie was a very musical person from a young age, and was also very curious. She’d always want to participate in turf wars but seen as she was too young, she couldn’t. She’d always want to sneak in and accidentally caused trouble and therefore getting her banned for a certain amount of time. When she was young, she also loved singing. It was usually when she was on her own but she would love doing it on video with her family. She would sometimes be quite a nuisance to other people by accident but didn’t really mind that much, as she couldn’t really tell. She was very oblivious when she was young. She’s also loved being in front of the camera all of her life as well as having all of the attention.
When she finally turned 14 and was able to join turf wars, she instantly jumped in. She tried with all different types of weapons until she stuck with the Slosher. She used it as another source of money to buy other weapons and gear. She also used it to buy materials for art, often painting. Her love for turf wars helped her get her inspiration and artistic flow. Turf wars also helped her gain popularity for being a good player, and for being basically anywhere at all times. A lot of people would be dumbfounded seeing how much she plays and how often they see her. Around 14, she also started making her own music, but once she uploaded her music for the first time she got made fun of. She was only a beginner, and this demotivated her.
Once she was a bit older, Cie started to become interested in all of the songs she heard in battles and in Inkopolis again; after becoming slightly tired of turf wars, she tried learning musical skills once more. She liked the mermaid theme and often made her songs more based on that. Her art skills also helped make album covers but they were often rather simple as she wasn’t as good at digital. She soon got better with a lot of practice but soon burnt herself out. A lot of her album art was unfinished and so were a lot of her songs, and most of the time, she only got half way through and then lost interest. Due to fear, she never really showed her music, only to her friends and family. Her first album was called ‘Gem of the Ocean’ and only featured 2 songs.
Ren once was living in the depths, where the octarians live. She was quite a good student; hard working and talented. Though, she wasn’t near the level of Marina. Despite not really knowing her, she looked up to her. She was smaller than most of the other octolings, being a Pygmy Octopus, which made her feel a bit left out. She was too focused on her work to even see what was going on around her. This made her more shy around other people, and might even seem cold sometimes.
She was freed by the Calamari Inkantation, but she left rather late. Once she got up to the surface, she was instantly charmed. Even though the Inklings had already been living with the Octolings for quite a while, she felt shy around them, knowing what happened in the past. She found safe places to stay and got to work learning how everything worked in Inkling society. She loved reading books about Inklings, especially seen as she had nothing else to work on. It took her a while, but she finally got there. She started to communicate with others as best as she could and she felt true happiness for once. She loved it on the surface.
When she was learning about Inkling society, she also heard more about the Calamari Inkantation and other songs. This got her more interested in learning more of the Inkling language, and then started singing more after being inspired by the Squid Sisters and Off The Hook. She only started playing in turf wars after she had finished her studies, which took a while. She only heard about Splatfests in the books she read and once one started she would only take part of her time to play. She wanted to take advantage of the lovely night sky and being surrounded with excitement while she could. She never really shows her emotion, so it made her feel a lot better.
Ren had seen Cie in the square a couple of times, but having a good reputation and being popular, it put her off. She had talked with a few other Inklings but it was mostly awkward conversations. One day, Cie accidentally bumped into her while preparing for a battle, and decided to spark up conversation after the absurd amount of times she had seen her sneaking past. And awkward interaction between acquaintances soon turned into an obsessive discussion between friends. They both were surprised at how much they had in common when in came to what they were a fanatic over, and soon started hanging out together more.
Texting each other back and forth on late nights and multiple other calls later, they agreed to meet up back in Inkopolis Square. Cie worked up the courage to share her music and art with her, and Ren, to Cie’s surprise, loved it. After that, Ren greatly admired Cie’s talent and decided to share what she had learnt about Inkling society and music, and soon went into a long talk about how she loved everything up there. Ren had never met somebody who got along so well with her, being very shy and rather isolated, and loved this new bond.
They both saw the potential with their talents. Once they both talked about the idol and music situation a bit more, they took the thought further. Ren loved Cie’s original mermaid idea, and they both agreed to stick with that. They both had to use their money from turf wars to buy extra gear after Cie’s had worn out. They had the best time making music and art together.
Both Cie and Ren were nervous to post their music, but after a long pep talk, they decided to post it. To their surprise, they got a large following in about a week or so. They were the happiest they’ve ever been, and they both had high hopes for the future. They moved over to Coral Capital - the new hotspot - and started their new idol life after needing new newscasters.
After being in the idol career for a while, they had split fans between them. They decided to make their own solos (as inspiration from the Squid Sisters’ solos) which ended up being very popular.

- Cie and Ren’s names are a portmanteau for ‘Siren’.
- Their Japanese names are ‘Suru’ and ‘Tasei’, taken directly from the Japanese translations of their species.
- The open clam shell on Ren’s head is a reference to Atlantic Pygmy Octopus hiding in clam shells.
- Cie likes to use Sloshers, while Ren likes to use Brellas.
- They specifically use the Soda Slosher and the Undercover Brella.
